Francis Brown was born in Soham Fen on 19th May 1924 (Newmarket Q3-1924 3B:722), son of Herbert Joseph and Annie Elizabeth BROWN (née TAYLOR), at one time of King's Farm, Soham Fen.


In the 1939 Register, at River Bank, Soham Fen were his father, Herbert J BROWN [27-6-1885], farm labourer; mother Annie E [16-5-1888]; brothers Godfrey [12-6-1913] farm labourer and Reginald [31-1-28] scholar and sister Brenda [16-10-1935] later Mrs WALLER]

A family member relates that the telegrams informing the family of the deaths of the two brothers arrived on the same day.

His brother Arthur died at sea, as prisoner, while being transported to Japan in 1944. see here




Part of 160th Infantry Brigade, 53rd (Welsh) Infantry Division, on 24th October 1944 the 2nd battalion, Monmouthshire Regiment liberated S'Hertogenboch. They lost Francis and one other that day.





Francis Brown is buried in Uden War Cemetery, Netherlands, grave 3:G:3
and also commemorated at Prickwillow and Ely
